The U.S. SNF based dialysis market was valued at USD 2.84 billion in 2022 and it is predicted to surpass around USD 5.05 billion by 2032 with a CAGR of 5.92% from 2023 to 2032.
The growth of the market can be attributed to the rising prevalence of ESRD patients in the U.S. and the growing number of on-site hemodialysis providers.
Many skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) are collaborating with the on-site dialysis providers such as DaVita Kidney Care, Fresenius Medical Care, U.S. Renal Care, Inc., Dialysis Clinic, Inc., and American Renal Associates to offer these services to their residents and bypass the expensive and stressful transportation. For instance, in July 2022, Dialyze Direct, a home hemodialysis service provider in SNFs, collaborated with the CommuniCare Family of Companies to provide on-site hemodialysis services at their facilities across the U.S.
The on-site hemodialysis care model is growing involving collaborations between SNFs and dialysis providers to offer on-site treatments at SNFs for residents. This can be attributed to the rising awareness regarding the benefits of on-site dialysis over in-center. Dialysis is usually the best option for ESRD patients waiting for transplantation. On-site hemodialysis offers treatment three times higher than daily dialysis patients. According to Concerto, on-site dialysis services require 17% less treatment time than traditional off-site services.
The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for on-site hemodialysis services at SNFs owing to social distancing issues during the transportation of patients. Hence, SNFs have collaborated with on-site dialysis providers. As per the annual report of the U.S. Renal Data System 2020, Medicare expenditure for ambulance services to transfer patients between skilled nursing and dialysis facilities reached more than USD 310 million per year, accounting for more than 1% of total Medicare expenditure on dialysis patients.

Region Insights
Based on region, the market is segmented into Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Midwest, and West. The Midwest segment held the largest market share in 2022 and is expected to grow at the fastest rate during the forecast period. The rising prevalence of ESRD in the region is expected to boost the demand for dialysis services in the region. According to the annual report of the U.S. Renal Data System 2022, in 2020, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin reported 49,651 prevalent ESRD patients, and Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas reported around 28,307 prevalent ESRD patients.
Moreover, the southeast region is expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period owing to the rising utilization of these services at SNFs by ESRD patients. As per the annual report of the U.S. Renal Data System 2022, around 69.4% of ESRD patients opted for dialysis for treatment, and around 30.6% of patients opted for functioning transplants. In-center hemodialysis services were the most frequently utilized therapy for the treatment of ESRD in the region.
The West region is expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period. This can be attributed to the rising initiatives by the SNFs in the region to offer on-site dialysis services. For instance, in September 2019, Brookdale Senior Living collaborated with Dialyze Direct to offer on-site dialysis services at four SNFs in Texas. Dialyze Direct is offering on-site dialysis services at Brookdale Willowbrook Place, Brookdale Galleria, Brookdale Patriot Heights, and Brookdale Lakeway in Texas.
